Hey – we have fun things to read! Seriously…

Posted by librarywaterfront on March 24, 2009

Grab a book - read it - get smrt

Grab a book - read it - get SMRT

Are you getting stressed out with all this last minute school work? Are you thinking that you can’t stand another project on ethics in the workplace. We have the relief for you. Why not check out your Waterfront Library and read a good fiction book. Yes we have them, honestly we do – we would never lie to you. We have Canadian authors – Atwood, Shields, Richler. Oh you are not feeling that are you – were you forced to read The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz in Grade 11? Thought so. What about Orwell, Dickens, Asimov – too heavy and wordy for you. Ok then you must love everyone’s favorite little author – Macaulay Culkin – yes you heard right. He has been compared to the great Ken Kesey – not sure by who but we can safely say by some source out there in the Internet realm. The Kite Runner – hey we have that one, Life of Pi – sure do. These guys are not lying to us, they are serious. What about poetry – yeah we have some of that fine stuff as well. Something for the whole family. So in closing – come in, select a book, take it home, read it, bring it back. We suggest this order – you can modify it, we don’t mind.

Freedom to Read Week – Read a banned book today

Posted by librarywaterfront on February 24, 2009

Naughty books are fun

Naughty books are fun

Freedom to Read Week is all this week -why not think about reading a book that has been banned or challenged in Libraries. How naughty of you! How do you feel about books being banned at all – speak away.
Check out this link @ http://www.freedomtoread.ca/docs/challenged_books_and_magazines.pdf to take a peek at a few of the books that have been challenged over the years in Canada.

Some of the books that have been banned and the reason why include: Catcher in the Rye (bad language), Huckleberry Finn & Tom Sawyer (Racism in characterization and language), the Goosebumps and Fear Street series (challenged right here in Halifax due to a parent’s group objection that the books were said to convey violence and a lack of respect for parental authority!); Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (parents were concerned that Harry Potter is engaged in wizardry, witchcraft, and magic-making, and that these activities are inappropriate for young readers). Come on into the Waterfront Library this week to see a few of the books that have been banned and maybe check out some of our books that somebody, somewhere might find offensive. What DO YOU find offensive?

Food for Fines – Help us Help you!

Posted by librarywaterfront on January 6, 2009

FOOD for FINES RESULTS – here are this year’s numbers:

21 people donated
69 items of food donated
$34.25 in cash donated
$138.25 in fines waived!
Thanks to all who helped the Waterfront Food Bank.

Give us food - then we will magically take away your fines....

Give us food - then we will magically take away your fines....

Food for Fines – have your fines waived when you bring in food!! Wow what a great idea who thought of this (not sure but it must have been a Canadian idea) It’s time again for the annual Novanet Libraries Food For Fines campaign! It runs from Thursday, January 15th – Sunday, January 25, 2009 and all participating Novanet libraries accept non-perishable food donations in exchange for waiving a portion of your library fines. Even better the food will stay right here in the Waterfront Campus Food Bank - students helping students (we are the middle person). For every non-perishable food item donated, the library will reduce your library fines by $2.00, to a maximum of $20.00 (per patron, not per Novanet library). If you choose not to bring in a food item, you still have the choice of donating your fine payments to this worthy cause. The monies that may be waived are “return late” fees only. But I don’t have overdue library fines you might ask yourself – no problem bring in food anyway to help stock the Food Bank. Remember the tag line – Good for the libraries, good for the Food Bank and…good for you! – catchy it is.

Betty: I wish I could ask the library a question online? Alice: What's online mean?

Guess what – you can still ask for research help even when Library Services are unavailable, and you can ask from home too! Careers – What do you want to be when you grow up?

Posted by librarywaterfront on October 28, 2008

When I grow up - I wanna be.....

When I grow up - I wanna be.....

Didn’t you always want to be an astronaut or a doctor? No, me either. I always wanted to be a hockey player but I learned pretty quickly that I would have a couple of issues – mostly involving my lack of talent! Oh well. When I went to University at SMU the plan was to be an urban planner but it changed when I fell in love with the Library World and came to the NSCC Halifax Campus.  Sometimes you never know where things might lead – that’s the fun of life I guess.

Carly’s Comments: What little girl doesn’t want to grow up to be a ballerina or a famous singer? As a little girl I would play dress up and take my bows in front of my imaginary audience or I would belt out Madonna tunes in a mock concert for the neighborhood kids. I studied dance and sang in the school choir for many years, but realized that a life on the stage was not quite for me. For a number of years I seriously thought about being a counsellor or a psychologist since I was the friend that people always confided in. But that too didn’t feel quite right. Aptitude testing in junior high indicated that I should be in the sciences or math but I was never passionate for the subjects the way I was for literature, history and helping people.
In high school I started to think I would be a writer – I love storytelling. I became a high school teacher since I thought it would be a wonderful way to help others and explore my passions. When I decided to change careers and become a librarian, I was still driven by the same passions that fueled me all those years before led me to where I am now. I teach regularly at NSCC, both in class and in small group. I help others and sometimes write documentation. I share my passion not only for literature but for all information and knowledge. And in my spare time when no one is watching, I turn up my stereo with Madonna blaring out – and start singing and dancing.

Dan’s Diary: When I was a five years old, I wanted to be (in no particular order) – an ichthyologist specializing in sharks, a paleontologist, a Jedi Knight or some combination of all three. The fact that I could even spell or pronounce the first two occupations mentioned at the age where I still fostered some faint hope that the third was a viable career option should let you know that I was and still am kind of a nerd. Now I work in a library…who could have seen that one coming. In fact, any subsequent career aspirations (including the trifecta of down-to-earth options mentioned in the opening sentence) can probably be traced back to something I read at a library somewhere that inspired me to set off on a new path. Eventually I just thought, “y’know, I spend so much time in these places that I might as well see if I can get on the payroll somehow”….and here I am. I still may look into that Jedi Knight thing though.
Check out the Library for books and magazines that will help out during and after Canada Career Week

Canadian Libraries Month – Hug a Library!

Posted by librarywaterfront on October 17, 2008

CLA group chillin' in the Library

CLA group chillin' in the Library

Nate Crawford, President:
“My favorite thing to do between classes is to check out the library’s magazines- it’s hard to buy them all or track them down in a heavily used public library, but from Rolling Stone to Maclean’s, they’re all on campus, and in mint condition!” (We do have some pretty cool mags – check out the Sept. 27th issue of New Musical Express – cool cover)

Aran Silmeryn, Vice President:
“There’s many things I like about our library, but what always turns my head are the displays of beautiful shiny new books along their side counter. It doesn’t matter how busy I am, every time I walk by there I have to slow down … stare … then pick one up and start leafing through it. Not only are they usually gorgeous, but the subject matter is intriguing without fail. I’m looking forward to Christmas break when I’ll actually have the time to take a couple home!” (Anne-Marie takes great pride in her side counter displays)

Kaitlyn Alderman, 1st Year Rep:
“What I like most about the NSCC Waterfront Library is how the shelves are organized. The subject labels on the ends of the aisles make it easy to find information relating to class or projects.” (We also like the cool shelf signs – look for even easier access in the future)

Rachel Tingley, 2nd Year Rep:
“One of the best things about the Library is the access it gives you to many different databases. You don’t have to be on campus to use them, either. You just have to log in with your library barcode. No matter what your research interests are, you can be sure to find a database that will direct you to all kinds of useful literature. Check out the databases available on a trial basis this month: Culinary Arts Collection, until October 27th and Grove Music Online, until October 24th.” (Has Carly ever mentioned how she loves to search the databases with some hot cocoa)

Brittany Elderkin, Secretary:
“I find that when I am working in the library on the computers I encounter many problems. (Such as power point and headers.) Having staff that are able and willing to help me is awesome. Thank You!!!” (We are always willing to help you nice people out there)

Ashlee Hinchey, Treasurer:
“BIG COMFY COUCHES” (The couches have been a big draw this year – what about a telescope in the Library – my suggestion)

Dan Hayward, Associations and Library Liaison:
“They gave me a job!” (Smart thing to say – gold star for you)

The Canadian Library Association is the national voice of the library and information community. NSCC was the first Library Diploma Program to establish a student chapter.

Music and Libraries – they have co-existed for centuries. Here at the Waterfront Library will have been happy to receive alot of new books – many which are on display in the Library – drop on by. Looking for a good book on Dylan or maybe get behind the scenes at the making of a Rolling Stones album (Keith Richards in the studio – just imagine the insanity)- then you have come to the right place. Don’t forget we also have music magazines to browse as well – come in and browse Rolling Stone, Billboard, URB, New Musical Express, Magnet, Spin and more! The Library would also love for you to test drive a database for us – Grove Music Online. Grove Music Online is considered to be the leading online resource for music research and is the unsurpassed authority on all aspects of music. It includes the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz. This database is provided on a trial basis for the Waterfront Campus only until October 24th. Free Legal Stuff

Posted by librarywaterfront on September 24, 2008

Free Legal Information - Do you have any issues?

Free Legal Information - Do you have any issues?

The Law Foundation of Nova Scotia has graciously given funds to the NSCC to help all students have access to legal resources. With this money, NSCC Library Services has subscribed to some of the most dynamic legal e-resources in the marketplace. Please visit our web site at www.library.nscc.ca and explore some of these titles. These databases include full-text access so you can print off or email yourself a copy of the article. We will be making additions to this collection in the near future so check back often! Some of these e-resources can only be accessed from a computer on campus while others require students to be registered at their campus library for off site access. Please take some time to explore these resources or visit the library – staff will be pleased to assist you in navigating this collection. Stay tuned for more announcements regarding additions to our e-resource collection. We still have thousands of online journals, magazines, newspapers that you can access from school or at home by going to http://www.library.nscc.ca/Resources/databases/browse_titles.asp — All you need is a valid library card and voila – the search can begin!

Meet the Crew

Posted by librarywaterfront on September 16, 2008

Rod, Carly, Anne-Marie & Library Assistant X

Rod, Carly, Anne-Marie & Grandma

The Waterfront Library staff is happy to welcome you to an awesome year! Please stop on in if you need any help – we are here to serve. Maybe we should introduce ourselves to help you understand us better. First we’ll start with Carly:

Carly Brake is the Campus Librarian. She is a product of the New Brunswick school system and enjoys organic foods, green living and her new house. She is a former high school teacher, a proud Acadian and has recently come home to the Maritimes from the big city of Toronto. Her distastes include running out of peppermint tea and she becomes annoyed when her iPod dies mid-song. You may see her in one of your classes as well giving you pointers about this great library system of ours.

Rod Tucker is often seen out and about with spiky hair and cargo pants. He is a former map maker before the world began to frighten him. He graduated from NSCC in 2000. He enjoys everything Dylan, Dickens and all things Scarlet J. He dislikes Mac’s, classical music and those annoying objects he so often avoids – vegetables.

Anne-Marie Richard is also a product of the New Brunswick school system and a graduate of the NSCC. She loves NKOTB, lazy Miramichi summers, and sailing. She hates early mornings, and the #60 bus. Say hi to her.
